Signal Integrity Fundamentals for Embedded Engineers

Recording and slides from a two-hour session on impedance, reflections and what a scope probe does to the measurement it is taking.

A past session, kept here as a replay with the recording attached.

What was covered

  • Transmission lines and why a 10 cm trace can be one
  • Reflection coefficient, and how much of a “glitch” is really the probe
  • Termination choices, and when the correct answer is to do nothing
  • Rise time as the parameter that actually sets the bandwidth you care about
  • Probe loading — a 10× probe adds capacitance to the node you are measuring, and on a fast edge that is not a detail

Materials

  • Slide deck (PDF)
  • The worked example board files used in the session
  • Measurement setup notes, including the probe compensation step that should happen before every capture and rarely does

The single most repeated question afterwards was about probe compensation, so that section is expanded here.
